That was the day when Steph and I went to Berkeley's Freight and Salvage to hear the New Lost City Ramblers give a panel discussion.

I didn't have enough guts to ask Mike Seeger during the Q & A if he and the others would like to join Tony & the Scholars later that day to perform at Artists & Craftsman Supply on Shattuck (I thought maybe I could publicly shame him into it). But I did approach the stage afterwards to ask John Cohen who declined the offer but seemed to like the band name.

Later we went up to the aforementioned art supply store where I know the manager, Michael. Urs was there but Tony couldn't make it. Michael invited me to come play in the store anytime but insisted that I not give him advanced notice, something about spontaneity and performance art.

When we started playing inside, amid the clutter of paint tubes, easels, drawing pads, canvases, and you name it, he put the green chalk board out on the sidewalk in front of the store. Before we started playing one of Michael's co-workers who had a kind of bright purple mohawk hairdo wasn't too happy about the prospect of folk music but afterwards said he liked our stuff.

We didn't stay very long. The customers seemed to enjoy even if we were obstructing more than half the rack of Golden acrylics. I think we earned 25 cents that day.

PS: Steph, thanks for setting-up this blog! Let's see where it goes.
